Upcoming Events and Important Dates

Mulick Park is a busy school... keep an eye on our calendar for these and other events!

Elementary School Track Comes to GRPS!

GRPS has teamed with the Grand Rapids Track Club to bring track and field events to GRPS elementary students! The club will meet regularly at school and at four track meets at Houseman Field. Participation is free and bus transportation will be provided to and from meets after school at Mulick. 2nd and 3rd grade practices will take place on Tuesdays throughout May at Mulick Park and 4th and 5th grade practices will take place on Thursdays. The meets start at 5pm and will occur on Wednesday May 16th, Thursday May 24rd, Thursday May 31st, and Thursday June 7th. Both boys and girls are invited to join in on the fun and prizes will be awarded to top participants. We would love to see plenty of volunteers and parent support - please contact Mrs. Tyler at 616-819-3181 if you are interested in getting involved. We'll see you at Houseman!

Congrats to our Elementary School Basketball Program Participants!

On Friday April 20th, the students and families involved with the Elementary School Basketball Program convened at Mulick Park for a celebratory banquet featuring winner's certificates, pizza, snacks, and words of thanks from our program's organizer, Mr. Bo. Our 5th grade boys' team received special trophies for their undefeated season with the program. Well done, kids!

Hard Work and a Bit of Fun Yields EXTREME Results!

What a fantastic start to the year! Our continuing Box Tops for Education drive brought in $319.00 to the school prior to March 1st, and our Chuck E. Cheese FUNdraiser brought in $167.92. This was enough to cover for the EXTREME SCIENCE event on Monday March 12th, an educational assembly promised to the students and staff. Our March Scholastic Book Fair was a success as well – a new location at our school's main entrance and expanded hours resulted in a 40% increase in sales and more than half a thousand dollars in Scholastic Dollars for the school. A big "hats off" to our students, Mulick Park families, volunteers, and the school faculty and staff for continuing to make these programs come to life!

A "Taste" of Things to Come...

We plan on hitting the ground running for the 2012 - 2013 school year. Be an active part in shaping the upcoming school year: join us at our final Mulick Park PTO / PAL meeting on Tuesday May 29th at 6pm. There we will discuss events, date planning, activities, and much more for 2012 - 2013. After several meetings with the Mulick Park staff, we have already identified a need for more aggressive, expanded fundraising to meet classroom needs. To raise these funds we will bring back World's Finest Chocolate to Mulick as a school-wide fundraiser! It's a "tasty" and easy way to raise hundreds and even thousands of dollars to assist with materials and supplies for our classroom and students. Be sure to "save the date"... we'll see you on the 29th!

The YMCA Veggie Van Comes to Mulick!

Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, the YMCA will be bringing fresh veggies and fruit to Mulick from 3:00pm to 4:00pm! Participate in FREE taste and food demonstrations. Produce will be on sale; debit cards, Bridge cards, and cash accepted. Check out more information about the YMCA's community-driven Farmer's Market program on their website.

Media Archives Area Available

Find links to school paperwork, news releases, photos, video, and more in our Media Archives area! If you are a Mulick Park faculty member, parent, or volunteer and you would like to use this area for school-related paperwork or forms for download, please let us know. It's just one more useful tool for staying in touch with events and projects happening at Mulick!

Box Tops for Education

Have you seen Box Tops for Education on breakfast cereals, Kleenex boxes, or other packaging? These can turn into real money for our school. Each month, we'll tally the total number of Box Tops raised by each class and bestow upon them the Shining Stars Box Tops Trophy! Check out the main hallway at Mulick for a running total raised by each class. The class with the largest overall collection at the end of the semester wins a pizza party! You can find Box Tops everywhere: check out their website for a complete list. We'll use these funds for fun educational assemblies for our kids at Mulick. To learn more, check out our letter to parents and check out the Teacher Resources area in our Media Archives for Box Tops collection sheets for the kids! (These use the freely available Adobe Reader to view and print.)

Traffic Safety at Mulick

Do you drop off or pick up your student(s) in the morning or afternoon at the school? Traffic can get a bit hairy! We are all very concerned about the safety of our kids. Following these procedures will ensure all students will be out of harm's way:

We want all students to be safe during this hectic time and with your help we can make sure it is a smooth transition!

Mulick Park Breakfast Club

Mulick Park serves breakfast in the cafereria every morning before school between 7:55am to 8:20am. Through the new Breakfast Club, when kids eat breakfast at Mulick they can win prizes just for eating breakfast at school! Kids who eat breakfast at school get higher test scores, visit the nurse less often, and are more attentive in class. Come join us!

Four Sundays, Four Museums, For Free Fun!

Did you know that one Sunday per quarter you can go downtown and enjoy each of the four most popular museums for FREE from noon to 5pm? In 2012 the dates are January 22nd, April 15th, July 15th, and October 21st. You may tour as many of these venues as you wish on these dates or try one out at a time:

The Grand Rapids Art Museum also hosts the "Skate and Create" series each Saturday from 10am to 3pm. This event features ice skating at Rosa Parks Circle and family events at the GRAM for the entire family. Enjoy hands-on art-making activities, family tours, and free hot cocoa in their winter-themed studio for just $2 a person! Visit the GRAM's website for a "Skate and Create" entrance coupon - kids under 5 are always free. These events will run through March 3rd.

Impact Tomorrow's Leaders Today!

All of us want the best for our Shining Stars. Would you like to make an impact on their lives both now and for the future? Join in a neighborhood tutoring / mentoring effort for the kids of Mulick Park. In one hour, once a week you will work on reading, comprehension and/or basic math. No experience required – just a love of children and a desire to see them succeed. For more information or to sign up for training in time to start in the 2nd Semester (mid-January), please contact Kelly Buist at kellybuist@gmail.com or 616-243-5424 or Jeni Stamas at Jeni_710@yahoo.com or 616-241-3954.

Volunteering at the Grand Rapids Public Schools

As parents, we are all concerned about the safety of our children. For this reason, GRPS requires a volunteer application to be submitted for any adult (non-student) volunteer. This application is available online at the GRPS website for downloading and printing. The application, once received and approved, is valid for two years. For questions relating to this process, feel free to contact the GRPS Volunteer and Parent Involvement Office at 616-819-2131.

True Success at Mulick Park

At Mulick Park, our Shining Stars are encouraged to display positive behavior and problem solving skills in a number of ways. Mulick Park PTO assists with the PBIS program at Mulick (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) and we also are benefiting from another program called True Success. Bill Heneveld from True Success visited us at the beginning of October and spoke to parents about how this program would be implemented at Mulick. Visit the True Success website for more information and watch for papers and activities coming home with your child throughout the school year!
